I have heard about this but it has never happened to me, until this week. I have a 2009 Subaru Forester with 175K miles . One of the reasons it continues to drive like a dream is Global Car Care. Their diagnosis, skill, and great products help them care for my car as if it were their own. Last Monday I brought my car into Global for and oil change and a thorough “once over” since I have not been able to drive it for 2 years due to heath reasons. Afterwards they told me that my front shocks were leaking and needed to be replaced, which includes a wheel alignment as well. So I scheduled an appointment to have that done. This is where it gets interesting... My next stop was the Subaru dealership in town to have some recall work done. After they were done they gave me an evaluation of my car which told me all was good except an engine oil leak due to worn out gaskets. (NOTE: They made no mention of my front shocks). I then asked how much that would cost. They said over $2,500 since they would have to pull the engine out replace all gaskets, belts, hoses, and spark plugs. So I called Global. They said their were no oil leaks , just the front shocks needed attention. So since I have good reason to trust Global and not the dealership's evaluation, I ignored their very expensive warning. The next day a salesman from the Subaru dealership called me and offers to buy my car. He doesn't give me a price, but wants me to bring it in. (in hopes that I'll trade it in for a new car). To summarize: I'm not interested in games and manipulation and will only use the dealership for recall work. NOTE: I do work for auto repair shops nationwide and know that the work done at independent auto repair shops maintains the dealer warranty (Magnusen-Moss Act* of 1975) often at better quality for much less money. That said, buyer beware. * According to the Magnusen-Moss Act of 1975, you may take your car to any repair shop you trust! Federal law says new car dealers can't deny you warranty service because your other routine scheduled maintenance was performed at your trusted independent repair shop.
